MEET ELLIE DURBIN

wedding planner

What is one of your favorite places to show people when looking at the Marlowe?

I love to show couples the Lechmere Park where we host outdoor ceremonies and talk about all the hidden gem photography spots.

How do you approach the planning of weddings?

One step at a time. The venue search can be overwhelming and I assure you that it is downhill from here. It will get easier!

Favorite hors d oeuvre on the menu?

It’s rarely chosen at first, but it’s a secret favorite: chicken and apple pita crisp.

What is a touch that you could add to weddings that is not expensive?

A simple signature cocktail. Often the ingredients you need are already on the bar and all you need is a sign!

What are your favorite and least favorite parts of a wedding?

Favorite part is just as the last person goes down the aisle and the ceremony is starting. Least favorite is getting everyone in just the right place to start the ceremony—surprisingly this is the trickiest part of coordinating!

Must have Photo Op in or around the hotel?

Under the bridge on Edwin H Land Blvd, where the vines grow.

What is one question that all couples should ask on venue sites?

All couples should review a proposal that includes their package, estimated guest count and taxes and fees.

Advice for couples post big day?

Write those thank you notes just a few at a time and it won’t feel like a chore. Also enjoy getting back to a routine—date nights, Netflix at home, and time with friends.

What is one piece of advice you wished you followed when you were planning your own wedding?

Even though I always remind couples they can be open with me if there’s something they want or if something isn’t quite right, I had to remind myself that my vendors aren’t mind readers. In the end my vendors were so appreciative and receptive when I communicated a specific expectation we had.

MEET SUZANNE CURRAN

wedding planner

What is one of your favorite places to show people when looking at the Marlowe?

My favorite place is the courtyard - It’s such a unique space that is extremely versatile for a ceremony or cocktail hour. We can adjust the armillary to be your wedding colors, and even project a picture of the couple on the back wall for everyone to see!

How do you approach the planning of weddings?

I try to put myself in the couple’s shoes and really listen to what the most important thing is to them on their wedding day. With planning my own wedding not long ago, I know how stressful the process can be. I do all I can to take the stress off my couples and make the planning as easy as possible.

What is your “dream” wedding menu?

Lobster bisque, burrata salad, filet mignon, and tiramisu for dessert.

Favorite engagement story?

I may be biased, but my own engagement story is my favorite! My husband flew down to FL by himself while I was on vacation with my best friend and completely surprised me by proposing on the beach during sunset. One of my favorite parts of being a wedding planner is hearing the engagement story!

Must have Photo Op in or around the hotel?

Lechmere Park across the street is great for outdoor shots. If you venture under the bridge, you can get some great photos with the Boston skyline in the backdrop. For the colder months, the grand staircase in our lobby is perfect for bridal party photos.

What is one question that all couples should ask on venue sites?

Ask about a suite for their wedding night - To end your night in a fancy suite really is the cherry on top of a perfect day!

Advice for couples post big day?

My biggest advice would be to completely unplug and relax on your Honeymoon. This is the only honeymoon you’ll ever take and really is a special time with your new husband or wife. Put your phones away, refrain from posting on social media, and truly enjoy being with each other and starting your new life together.

What is one piece of advice you wished you followed when you were planning your own wedding?

My photographer suggested taking a couple minutes after the ceremony to step away to a quiet area, just the two of us, and simply revel in the fact that we just got married. If you think about it, you spend countless hours planning this one day that is ultimately over in the blink of an eye we may not have another moment alone together until after the reception ends. Man, I wish I took that advice, because she was 100% right! I always suggest to my couples now!
